The Books That Keep Us Up at Night

Monday Morning Blog
There are two kinds of books that keep us awake: the ones that make us afraid to turn out the light, and the ones that make us forget we were supposed to turn it out an hour ago.
With Halloween approaching, scary stories get plenty of attention. But a book doesn’t need a haunted house or a mysterious noise in the attic to steal your sleep. Sometimes all it takes is a character you care about and a chapter that ends in exactly the wrong place.
“Just One More Chapter”
Those may be the most dangerous words in a reader’s vocabulary.
You check the clock. There’s time for one more chapter. Then somebody reveals a secret, an old sweetheart comes back to town, or a perfectly sensible character makes a decision you strongly object to.
Well, you can’t leave things like that.
Before long, the house is quiet, your pillow has gone unused, and tomorrow morning is becoming a problem. You’ll regret this when the alarm rings. At the moment, however, you have more pressing concerns. Someone in chapter seventeen needs to explain himself.
It Doesn’t Have to Be a Thriller
A good mystery certainly knows how to hold bedtime hostage. But a gentle romance can do the job just as well.
Will they give each other another chance? Will pride get in the way? Will somebody finally say what every reader has known for the last sixty pages?
Humor has its own trap. A joke book looks harmless on the nightstand until you find yourself reading “just one more” and laughing hard enough to wake the person beside you. Explaining the joke rarely improves the situation.
Whatever the genre, the books that keep us reading give us a reason to stay a little longer. We want an answer, another laugh, or a few more minutes in a place we’ve come to enjoy.
A Little Reading Before Lights Out
As the evenings grow longer, there’s something especially inviting about a bedside lamp, a comfortable blanket, and a book waiting where you left it.
At Beaver Lake Books, we like being part of those small pleasures, whether you’re enjoying a clean romance, collecting groaners to share with the family, or winding down with a word search.
Of course, you could set a firm bedtime and stick to it.
You could also stop at a chapter break.
Let us know how that works out.
Start the week with us next Monday at 9 AM.
