Meet Sarah McMahan, Author of Blue Road Stand

Some love stories begin with a chance encounter. Blue Road Stand begins with people trying to hold their lives together and discovering what they might build together.
Set among the peach orchards of Western Colorado, Blue Road Stand: A Clean Romance of Second Chances brings together Claire and Jack in a story of family responsibilities, financial struggles, and the possibility of starting again. We asked author Sarah McMahan about the setting, the story, and what she hopes readers will take away from it.
What inspired you to write Blue Road Stand?
I wanted to write about people who have lived long enough to understand that life doesn’t always follow the plan. They have responsibilities. They’ve been disappointed. Falling in love may be the last thing on their minds.
Claire is trying to help her mother keep the family orchard going after her father’s stroke. Jack has financial worries connected to his cattle. Neither needs another complication, but each may have something the other needs. That seemed like a good place to begin a love story.
Is this your first book?
Blue Road Stand is my first published novel under the Sarah McMahan name. It’s an introduction to the kinds of stories I hope readers will come to associate with that name: clean romances with a strong sense of place, believable problems, and people worth caring about.
Why did you set the story in Western Colorado?
The country around Grand Junction gives a writer a wonderful setting. You have peach orchards, agricultural communities, Grand Mesa, and the Colorado National Monument. There’s beauty everywhere, but making a living from the land still takes hard work.
That combination suited the story. The orchard is beautiful, but Claire can’t pay the bills by admiring it. It’s her family’s livelihood, and keeping it going matters to her.
Why set it in the 1970s?
I liked the pace and circumstances of that period for this story. People had fewer ways to reach one another instantly. Conversations often happened face to face, and solving a problem could mean getting in the truck and going to see someone.
It also gave me room to explore a community where reputation and personal relationships carry considerable weight. People remember your mistakes, but they may also be the first to show up when you need help.
What should readers know about Claire and Jack?
They both have good reasons to be cautious. They’re dealing with practical problems that won’t disappear simply because they’re attracted to each other.
What interests me is how they begin to recognize each other’s abilities. Respect grows as they work together. Trust takes a little longer. I wanted readers to enjoy watching that happen.
Where does the Blue Road Stand fit into their story?
The stand grows out of a collaboration between Claire and Jack as they look for ways to ease the financial pressures on her family’s orchard and his cattle operation.
I liked the idea that something useful could come from two people pooling their ideas and being willing to try. Building the stand gives them a reason to spend time together, make decisions, and find out how well they can depend on one another.
Who or what inspires your writing?
I’m drawn to ordinary people who keep going through difficult times. The person caring for a parent. The family working to save a business. Someone who has been hurt and still finds the courage to trust another person.
Those lives are full of stories. A quiet decision to stay, help, forgive, or try again can change someone’s future. That’s the kind of moment I enjoy writing about.
Why did you choose to write clean romance?
I enjoy the emotional side of a love story: the uncertainty, the humor, the growing affection, and the moment someone finally says what they mean.
There’s plenty of room for romantic tension in a conversation or a small act of kindness. I want readers to feel the connection between the characters and look forward to the next time they’re together.
What would you like future readers to know before they pick up the book?
They can expect a love story with family and working life woven into it. Claire and Jack have responsibilities, and those responsibilities help shape their choices.
There are worries and setbacks, but there’s warmth, too. I hope readers enjoy spending time in this place and feel invested in what happens to the people who live there.
Do you plan to write more books?
Yes. I’d like to keep exploring stories about second chances, family ties, and finding your place in a community.
I’m particularly interested in the pull between leaving home and returning to it. Sometimes people have to go away to understand what they value. Sometimes they come back expecting everything to be the same and discover that they’ve changed, too.
What do you hope readers take away from Blue Road Stand?
First, I hope they’ve enjoyed a good story. I want them to care about Claire and Jack and feel glad they spent time with them.
Beyond that, I hope the book leaves them with a little encouragement. You can’t undo every disappointment or recover every lost opportunity. But there may still be something ahead worth saying yes to.
