If Silence Is Golden

If Silence Is Golden, Why Is Everyone So Broke?
We have been told for generations that silence is golden.
If that is true, the modern world is facing a serious financial crisis.
Everyone has an opinion, and thanks to social media, we now have the privilege of hearing every last one of them. People offer instant commentary on politics, entertainment, sports, weather, restaurant service, and what a stranger wore to the grocery store.
Nobody pauses. Nobody reflects. Nobody takes a breath and asks, “Does the world really need to hear this?”
The answer is occasionally no.
There was a time when a foolish thought might remain safely inside a person’s head until it disappeared. Today, it can be typed, posted, shared, and viewed by several thousand people before breakfast. By lunchtime, two sides have formed, insults have been exchanged, and someone who wasn’t involved has demanded an apology.
Silence isn’t always the answer. Important things need to be said. Wrong ideas should be challenged, and honest conversations matter. But not every quiet moment is an emergency waiting to be filled.
Sometimes the wisest contribution to a conversation is to listen. Sometimes it is to nod thoughtfully. Sometimes it is to take another sip of coffee and let somebody else discover the weakness in his own argument.
That last one can be particularly entertaining.
We don’t need fewer ideas. We need more thought before announcing them to the world.
Silence may be golden, but apparently most people would rather spend the day making noise on credit.

PS: I was going to add another paragraph, but I decided to invest in silence.
