Curmudgeon’s Corner #3: The Problem With Common Sense

There was a time when common sense wasn’t considered a superpower. It was just the way folks got through the day. You fixed what was broken, spent less than you earned, told the truth even when it was uncomfortable, and understood that every decision had consequences.

Somewhere along the way, common sense became an endangered species.

These days, common sense gets shouted down by talking points, buried under mountains of regulations, and replaced by whatever happens to be trending this week. And nowhere does that seem more obvious than in Washington, D.C., where simple problems somehow become thousand-page bills and everyone spends more time blaming the other side than solving anything.

Now, before somebody starts writing me an angry letter, let me save you the postage. This isn’t about Republicans or Democrats. It’s about remembering that good ideas don’t belong to one party, and bad ideas don’t suddenly become smart because your favorite politician thought of them.

The world could use a little more listening, a little more humility, and a whole lot more common sense.

That’s what Curmudgeon’s Corner is all about.

No yelling. No fancy jargon. No pretending every problem has an easy answer. Just one old curmudgeon looking at the world, scratching his head, and asking, “Whatever happened to plain old common sense?”

Pull up a chair if you’d like. You don’t have to agree with me. Around here, thoughtful disagreement is still welcome.

Common sense never went out of style. It just got harder to find.
