Author Interview: R.G. Elliott Talks Grandpa’s Groaners and the Joy of a Good Eye-Roll

If you’ve ever heard a joke so wonderfully bad that you couldn’t help but laugh—and groan—then you already understand the charm behind Grandpa’s Groaners and More Grandpa’s Groaners. Today, we’re sitting down with the man behind the mischief, R.G. Elliott, to chat about where these books came from, who they’re for, and what might be coming next.

Interviewer: For readers who may be new to your work, what exactly are Grandpa’s Groaners books?

R.G. Elliott: They’re clean, family-friendly joke collections built around classic dad-joke humor. Think puns, quick one-liners, and the sort of jokes that make kids roll their eyes before they burst out laughing anyway. Each book is designed to entertain grandparents, parents, teachers, and anyone who appreciates a simple laugh.

Interviewer: Who’s the ideal reader?

Elliott: Honestly, anyone who likes humor that isn’t sarcastic or mean-spirited. But these books were written with families in mind—especially those looking for something wholesome to share. I get a lot of feedback from grandparents who use them during family gatherings, teachers who use them to warm up a classroom, and even pastors who slip them into Sunday bulletins or children’s messages. The jokes are easy to remember and easy to repeat, which seems to make them pretty popular with kids.

Interviewer: Where did the idea come from? Why write a series of groaners?

Elliott: I grew up in a family where humor was part of the daily routine. My dad and granddad were both world-class pun-slingers. No hall pass, no homework check, no dinner conversation was safe. After years of collecting jokes, scribbling them in notebooks, posting them online, and sharing them with friends, I finally reached the point of thinking, “Why not turn this into something real?” That’s what kicked off Grandpa’s Groaners.

Interviewer: How has the reaction been so far?

Elliott: Honestly, humbling. You never know how books like this will land. Humor can be hit-or-miss because everyone’s taste is different. But readers have been surprisingly enthusiastic. The reviews tend to say things like, “Finally, jokes I can share with my grandkids!” or “This is exactly what my classroom needed.” It’s fun watching people discover that simple, old-school humor still hits the spot. And the repeat buyers tell me they’re using the books for holiday gatherings, road trips, school events, and church camps.

Interviewer: Tell us a little about your background. How did you come to humor writing?

Elliott: I’ve always been a storyteller. Over the years I’ve worked in publishing, marketing, and graphic design, and humor naturally wove itself into everything I did. At some point, I realized I enjoyed collecting and arranging jokes almost as much as writing original content. Dad jokes are universal—they cross generations and cultures—and they make people connect. That’s what I enjoy most about writing them.

Interviewer: Any new books in the pipeline?

Elliott: Oh yes. I’m working on Grandpa’s Groaners: Holiday Edition, which pulls together jokes for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and even the oddball holidays like National Donut Day. I’m also tinkering with Grandpa’s Groaners: The Classroom Collection. Teachers are huge supporters of the series, so I want to give them something tailored to their world. And of course, there’s talk of adding a daily email subscription—one groaner delivered every morning to kick off the day.

Interviewer: Anything else you want readers to know?

Elliott: Just that laughter matters. These books aren’t meant to be complicated. They’re meant to sit on a coffee table or in a backpack or in a teacher’s top drawer—ready to be opened when someone needs a quick smile. If a joke gets a groan and a grin, then it’s done its job.

If you’re looking for something fun, lighthearted, and just plain silly to brighten your day—or someone else’s—Grandpa’s Groaners and More Grandpa’s Groaners are a great place to start. Grab a copy, share a laugh, and keep those eye-rolls coming.

Daily Groans: Why Dad Jokes Are the Secret to a Happier Life

Let’s be honest—dad jokes are gloriously terrible. They’re cheesy, eye-roll-worthy, and often followed by an awkward silence or a groan louder than the joke itself. But here’s the twist: that groan? It’s doing something good for you.

Believe it or not, dad jokes may just be a secret weapon for better mental health, stronger family connections, and a daily dose of joy.

If you enjoy this kind of light-hearted, stress-relieving humor, take a look at our Joke BooksOpens in a new tab. collection — full of fun and groan-worthy laughs that bring people together.

Why We Groan (and Why That’s Good)

Dad jokes are often dismissed as low-tier humor. But that’s exactly the point—they’re harmless, goofy, and safe for all ages. In a world full of bad news and serious headlines, a bad pun about a banana peel or a confused skeleton can feel like comic relief.

Laughter—even the reluctant kind—releases endorphins. Those feel-good chemicals can reduce stress, lift your mood, and even ease physical pain. So even when a dad joke makes you roll your eyes, it’s quietly working to improve your day.

And here’s the beauty: the groan is part of the magic. It’s a shared moment of recognition. You heard it. You hated it. But you got it. That small social spark can create a feeling of connection—even between people who wouldn’t normally laugh at the same things.

Laughter That Builds Bonds

Dad jokes shine in social settings. They’re inclusive. They don’t rely on harsh punchlines, edgy humor, or putting anyone down. They’re built for family dinners, awkward car rides, and moments when you just need to break the tension.

Telling dad jokes with kids builds vocabulary, playfulness, and even resilience. Hearing a joke flop and seeing someone laugh anyway teaches them that humor doesn’t have to be perfect to be valuable. And in multigenerational homes, they offer a universal language where grandkids and grandparents can both roll their eyes together.

Even groaning has a purpose—it’s often accompanied by a smirk, a head shake, or a playful jab. That’s bonding behavior, and it matters more than we give it credit for.

A Few Favorites from Grandpa’s Groaners

Straight from the pages of Grandpa’s Groaners, here are a few classic dad jokes guaranteed to provoke eye-rolls (and maybe a smile):

What do you call a fish with no eyes?
Fsh.

I used to play piano by ear…
But now I use my hands.

What did the janitor say when he jumped out of the closet?
“Supplies!”

These kinds of jokes are clean, quick, and easy to remember. Perfect for slipping into a lunchbox note, family text thread, or awkward elevator ride.

One Groan a Day Keeps the Gloom Away

You don’t have to be a dad to love dad jokes. You just have to be willing to enjoy a little silliness. In fact, adding a “Daily Groan” to your routine—like reading one each morning or sharing one at the dinner table—can be a simple way to boost connection and lighten the mood.

At Beaver Lake Books, we celebrate groan-worthy greatness with books like Grandpa’s Groaners, designed to deliver one eye-roll a day in the best possible way.

So go ahead—embrace the cringe. Roll your eyes. Laugh anyway. Your brain (and your family) will thank you.

Are Books a Good Christmas Gift? Here’s What the Experts Say

Are books a good Christmas gift?

Every year when Christmas rolls around, the same question pops up: What makes a genuinely good gift? Something thoughtful, personal, lasting — and ideally not overpriced or destined for the re-gift pile. Books check all those boxes, and according to authors, librarians, teachers, and psychologists, they’re one of the best gifts you can give.

Let’s look at why the experts keep coming back to books as a top holiday choice.

Books Feel Personal Without Being Complicated

You don’t have to know your recipient’s shoe size or whether they already own a kitchen gadget. But choosing a book says, I thought about you. A romance fan gets a cozy winter love story. A puzzle lover gets a fresh word search book. A fantasy reader gets the latest epic release. It’s thoughtful without being stressful — and that alone makes books a smart Christmas pick.

They Don’t Expire, Break, or Go Out of Style

Teachers and librarians will tell you: a book lasts. You can read it today, tuck it on a shelf, return to it in a year, lend it to a friend, or pass it down. In a world full of disposable gifts, books stand out as something that earns its keep.

Psychologists even note that rereading a loved book can reduce stress and increase positive emotions. Unlike most presents, this one gives back over and over.

Books Fit Every Budget

Experts in publishing are quick to point out how cost-friendly books are. Whether you’re spending $6 on a puzzle book or $30 on a deluxe edition, you can find something meaningful at any price point. And because books naturally feel substantial, even a budget-friendly pick feels generous.

They Encourage Connection

Something people often overlook is how often books spark conversation. Families bond over shared reads, couples trade favorite novels, grandparents pass down classics, and kids discover new worlds. A book is more than paper — it’s an invitation to connect.

So… Are Books a Good Christmas Gift?

The experts agree: absolutely. They’re personal, meaningful, affordable, and unforgettable. Whether it’s a clean romance, a joke book, a devotional, a thriller, or a puzzle book, you’ll never go wrong wrapping up a good read for someone you care about.

Author Spotlight: A.K. Moore Talks About Her Debut Clean Romance, A Matter of Trust

“It feels surreal.”

Beaver Lake Books:
A.K., big week for you. Your first novel is officially out in the world. How does it feel?

A.K. Moore:
Surreal. Exciting. Terrifying. All of it. I’m checking my dashboard like a new parent watching the baby monitor. But mostly I’m grateful to finally share this story. I started working on it over 25 years ago. I guess persistence pays off!

Where the Story Began

BLB:
What sparked the idea for A Matter of Trust?

AKM:
It started with a simple question: What happens when two good people are trying their best, but fear keeps getting in the way? I love stories where the conflict comes from vulnerability, not villains. Then I pictured a small snowy town and two hearts learning to trust again, and I couldn’t let it go.

As this question cooked in my mind, I remembered a scenario described by a professor I admired from college. During summer breaks, he would visit his cabin in the Rocky Mountains and sit beside the nearby creek, playing his saxophone. Neighbors would gather along the creek bank with their lawn chairs and favorite beverages, listening to him play. And I thought to myself, “What a great idea for this book!”

Thirty Years in the Making

BLB:
How long did you work on the book?

AKM:
Off and on for more than thirty years. Life got busy, doubt crept in, and at one point I stuck the manuscript away. But the characters wouldn’t leave me alone. Eventually, I realized the only way to get peace was to finish it.

Hardest Part of the Process

BLB:
What challenged you the most while writing?

AKM:
Letting the characters be messy. I wanted to hurry to the heart-warming moments, but real emotional growth takes time. Also, I rewrote the final chapters three times. I wanted the ending to feel earned, not rushed.

Writing Influences

BLB:
Who inspired you as a writer?

AKM:
Authors like Janette Oke and Debbie Macomber. They proved you can write sweet, faith-rooted and moral romance that still hits deep emotionally. I also take inspiration from real couples who work through trust and forgiveness one day at a time.

A Surprise Standout Character

BLB:
Which character surprised you the most?

AKM:
Cole surprised me the most. He started out in this process as an emotionally stunted, rock-hard man who couldn’t acknowledge, much less understand, his own emotions. As the book took shape, I realized that he wasn’t really that type of person. He had a great capacity for kindness and warmth. His sense of humor came as a terrific surprise, as well. I found myself laughing out loud as I wrote some of the scenes in the diner and alongside the creek.

On Authentic Dialogue

BLB:
Readers are already complimenting the natural dialogue. What’s your secret?

AKM:
I listen. People say the most honest, heartfelt things in everyday conversations. I wanted the dialogue to feel like something you’d overhear in a coffee shop or after church—warm, real, and sometimes a little funny without trying to be.

What Readers Should Take Away

BLB:
What do you hope readers feel when they close the book?

AKM:
That trust isn’t automatic. It’s built brick by brick. And that forgiving yourself can be just as brave as opening your heart to someone else. I want readers to believe that these characters could be real people with real, authentic lives.

What’s Next?

BLB:
Is another book already brewing?

AKM:
Oh yes. Another clean romance is underway. And I have several ideas simmering on the back burners of my mind, as well.

Final Thoughts

A Matter of Trust is a beautiful, uplifting story from a promising new voice in clean romance. If you enjoy emotional depth without explicit content, this is a debut worth celebrating.

The Role of Humor in Business Success

How Laughter Can Boost Engagement, Creativity, and Brand Loyalty

In the fast-paced and often stressful world of business, humor may seem like a luxury or even a distraction. But in reality, humor is an incredibly powerful tool that can drive engagement, foster creativity, and build stronger connections with clients and employees alike. By integrating humor into marketing, team culture, and customer service, businesses can achieve not only greater success but also a more positive and dynamic work environment.

If you enjoy this kind of light-hearted, stress-relieving humor, take a look at our Joke BooksOpens in a new tab. collection — full of fun and groan-worthy laughs that bring people together.

Humor Boosts Employee Engagement and Morale

A lighthearted work culture promotes happiness, and happy employees are often more productive and innovative. Encouraging humor in the workplace allows employees to break the ice, bond with colleagues, and feel more comfortable expressing ideas. According to studies, laughter releases endorphins that reduce stress, creating an atmosphere where creativity can thrive. Teams that incorporate humor into their daily interactions are more likely to communicate openly, collaborate effectively, and solve problems together.

By fostering a sense of humor in leadership and team-building activities, companies not only create a more enjoyable work environment but also reduce burnout and turnover rates. Happy employees who enjoy coming to work every day are more likely to stay and contribute to long-term success.

Humor Enhances Marketing Campaigns

In the digital age, where content is king, humor can be a game-changer for marketing campaigns. Consumers are constantly bombarded with ads, emails, and social media posts, making it harder for brands to stand out. A clever, well-timed joke or a playful ad can grab attention in ways that conventional messaging cannot. Memorable humorous content has the potential to go viral, amplifying a brand’s reach and increasing customer engagement.

Brands that use humor to connect with their audience often develop stronger brand loyalty. Think of successful campaigns from companies like Old Spice, Geico, and Wendy’s—all of which have incorporated humor into their marketing strategies with great success. The key is to know your audience well and use humor that resonates without crossing any lines. When used effectively, humor helps brands appear more approachable, relatable, and human.

Humor Strengthens Customer Relationships

Customer service is another place to let humor shine. It’s not just about making people laugh—it is about humanizing your brand and creating a friendly, approachable experience for your customers. Whether you are responding to a social media query or engaging with customers face-to-face, humor can help defuse tense situations, put clients at ease, and build trust.

For example, companies that handle complaints or negative reviews with a sense of humor often find that customers respond more positively. A witty, well-handled response can even turn an upset customer into a loyal advocate for your brand. The secret is to use humor sparingly and appropriately, supporting professionalism while keeping things light.

Summary

Humor is more than just entertainment—it is a powerful tool that can enhance employee engagement, strengthen marketing campaigns, and improve customer relationships. By embracing humor, businesses create a more dynamic work culture, stand out in a crowded marketplace, and connect with customers on a personal level. When used thoughtfully, humor has the potential to propel a business toward lasting success.
